Link-Tip for "fabric designers" in the US

For all of those living in the US who might have gotten curious about getting fabric with your own design printed on it after all my talk about fabric designing  .... ;-)
I just happen to read this very detailed post at Sew Can Do about it and thought maybe it is helpful to you guys.
So if it sounds interesting to you to get your own fabric - go over and check out her post!

Fabric design contest

For those who remember that fabric design contest that I told you about ... and made you vote for me ...
I am so sorry that I did not update you on it sooner!

Well, I did not win.

Otherwise I would have certainly told you earlier! And I did not win by far ....

But, the good news is ... now Stoffn is holding contests regularly. YEAH!
Yes, I am seriously excited about that. It does become kinda addicting ...
It is really fun! I love to create designs!
Or in other words doodle, make my husband scan and arrange it the way I want it. I did color it myself this time though!

I have to learn so much about using GIMP. I would really love to be able to draw directly using my computer ... but I really really am totally crap doing that.

Anyway, so at the moment there is a contest running and the theme is food. Well, I HAD to join and HAD to draw muffins of course. This is what I entered

... and actually this time it does not look as bad as last time ...
My votes I mean.

Also this time it is alot easier to vote - you do not have to sign up or anything.
Just go to the website, find my entry ;-) and klick "Gefällt mir" (which is German and means I like it)
That is it!

I am not going to make you vote for me again. I am feeling a bit stupid and bad after last time ...
But if you somehow feel the urge to vote for me anyway ... I am not going to stand in your way. ;-)

One of these days I really have to order myself some fabric from Stoffn. The more I look at their website and think about it the more ideas pop into my head what I could do ... just have to get them sorted. And who knows, maybe I will get some gift certificates for Christmas. I will definitely put that on my list! Santa, do you hear me?!

Do you guys have similar services where you can get your own designs printed on fabric in your country? And have you ever used them?

Total bribery - or THANK YOU for voting

So I was thinking ....
I really wanna win this

- and if I win it would be great as I would get my own design printed.

But what is in it for you?

So I decided IF I win (meaning if I am the first, second or third winner) I will give to one person of you
- who voted and therefore helped me win -
30cm of the fabric that I win.

I am not too sure but I think that would be one or two fat quarters (depending on how wide the fabric is).

And for those of you who are not that much into psychedelic purple teacups ;-) I will put together up to 500g of

chocolate

(cause that amount is what I can send witout total breaking my budget - mailing in Germany is really expensive!)
Who does not like chocolate?!
I will contact you and ask you what you like - dark, milk chocolate, nuts or raisins ... whatever. German, Swiss, Belgium chocolate ... they are all amazing, so I am sure you will love it!

Each of your votes will count as one entry toward the chocolate/ fabric draw!
(So if you vote for one design that is one entry - if you vote for all four you get four entries.)

I  wish I would be able to give all of you chocolate!
But if I would do that I would be left broke ... and would not be able to blog anymore ... so I guess you DO NOT WANT THAT!?
*please nod here*

Thanks to all who have already voted for me! That is SO SO SO SWEET of you!
If you have not done so already please leave a comment telling me which designs you voted for here or under this post
and I will put you in the chocolate/ fabric draw. :-)
And all others - please vote and tell all your friends and friends of friends ... to vote! :-)
As a matter of fact, if you blog about this to get others to vote for me I will put you into the draw 3 extra times.
Please again tell me in a comment if you blogged about it so I know about it.

Now is that bribery or a nice way of saying thanks ... I can not make up my mind ...

To be honest - I have no idea how long the voting goes and could not find anything about that ... so ... just in case ...hurry. :-)

Please VOTE for me!

Remember I told you about the fabric I designed
And remember that I threatened that I would ask you for your help when the voting starts?

Well, NOW is that time! :-)

Voting started today - so PRETTY PLEASE WITH CHERRY ON TOP - if you are on facebook - vote for any or all of my designs.
(If you are not registered on facebook unfortunately you can not vote.)

Basically what you have to do is go to this SITE - they are hosting the contest (it is the profile page of DAWANDA which is similar to etsy). I think in order to be able to vote you have to LIKE them. (At least it did not work otherwise for me.) So all you do is hit the LIKE button that should be somewhere at the top.
Then you can go directly to my entries and LIKE them as well (the like button should be right underneat the "photo")

It would be SO awesome if you could help me out!

If my description was in any way confusing or there are other questions just ask them in the comments!

BIG THANKYOU!!!

Designing Fabric ...

I stayed up WAY too late Monday night designing fabric!
Now that sound's cool, doesn't it?

Should I leave it at that?

Okay okay ... so, no, I have not become a fabric designer! :-(
But if someone out there wants to hire me - feel free to write me an email! ;-)

Here in Germany there is a new online-service - you can print your own fabric. Like Spoonflower. Just in Germany. It's called stoff'n. Which is German for fabric. Well, actually "Stoff" is German for fabric.
Stoff'n is what you say if you are a black mole handpuppet with a speech disorder ... but to get into that would lead way too far ...

Anyway, so I was quite excited when that online store opened this year. But also it is not necessarily cheap to get your own fabric printed. Which seems natural - as they print it just for you. But that is the reason why I have not tried it yet.
Last weekend I saw that they are having a contest. Design your own fall themed fabric. And you can win fabric!
The winners get their own fabric printed.
WOW!

So over the weekend I started doodling and thinking up designs. I had some doodly kinda designs in mind and thought I would do the following:
make some hand sketches
get hubby to scan them
figure out how to arrange and color them in GIMP
make a design
!
Sounds good?
However, at the weekend I kinda forgot to mention the whole thing to hubby though ...
So on Monday when I was kinda finished with my sketches I told him and asked whether he would help me to figure out GIMP.
(I love GIMP as it is free and you can do LOADS of stuff with it. I do not love GIMP as it is not necessarily intuitive ... I am really having a hard time figuring things out. Once I know how to do something I am fine. But everytime I try to do something new .... it takes FOREVER!)
He said yes. As hubby is always rather busy - he is the one actually working in our family and not just having fun with the kids like I am ;-) - I mentioned that the contest runs until the 14th of September so we would have to be done by then.
After I said that he looks at me rather puzzled and says "The 14th is TOMORROW."
I am in shock.
I gasp.
WHAT?
How can it be the middle of September already.
September has just started!
How is that possible!?

So I figured there is no way I will be able to hand in a design in time.
But hubby did take the time and helped me all evening to at least make two designs. I have so many more in my head but am happy that we at least got something together. Well, to be completely honest - he ended up doing all the fiddling with GIMP as otherwise it would have taken much longer. I did tell him though which colors and where to put stuff. :-)
So it was a joint effort ...

So here you can see my designs:

I love the tree and the leaves. This is just a very small patch ... if you would order the fabric you would place many of these bits next to each other (there is a programme on that online-service that does that for you) so you end up with fabric with many trees and even more laves.
Oh, I love how those leaves turned out!

Wanna know a secret? I am not such a good doodler. So when I had the idea of having fabric with many small leaves on there I tried doodling different ones ... and well, it did NOT look pretty. So I thought to myself that design will not be made by me! No way am I able to draw pretty leaves.
Then I went for a walk with little man like every day.
And while I was walking I looked at all the beautiful trees on my way ... and it hit me!
What do you do if you can't draw something well?
COPY it!
Where do you look if you want to copy leaves?
Google?
Well, no - even though that is a pretty good answer for everything else. ;-)
Leaves of course. I mean the real ones. Out in nature. On trees. Or on the ground!
So I collected a whole bunch while I was walking. Back home I simply put them on some white paper and traced around them simplifying the shape a bit. Hubby scanned my drawings and made them MUCH smaller. And that's how those leaves ended up on my design.
Am I clever or what?

I know, I know - it's not SUCH an amazing idea. But you would not believe how happy it made me at the time as it meant I could create what I had in my head after all!

Second design - teacups of course. :-)
I know, the colors kinda hurt in the eye. I actually wanted to make a design that would be more soothing colors ... but it was very very late by the time we started working on this and picking out colors and matching them does take quite long. So we decided to kinda go crazy and pick ANYthing (well, kinda) and get finished quicker.
I think this is not the type of fabric you would want to make a dress out of! :-)
But I can imagine it being quite nice for small accents ...

What do you think about my first attempts of fabric design?
Btw, I will need your help . The decision who wins will be made via facebook likes. So I will need all of you to go there and like my design(s)!
I will write another post for it when they start the voting.
